Jen and Tristan, and their backyard wedding on Bowen island B.C.
On digital and film.
I had been excited for this wedding for a while, for Jen and Tristan’s vision for their wedding was so uniquely their own. They hosted an intimate collection of friends and family in their back yard for their wedding on Bowen Island. Jen – a superb gardener and potter – spent so much time and intention into cultivating the garden for their day, and each ceramic vase on the tables were handmade by her. The day was laid back, heart led, and just full of such simplistic joy.
They got married by the big rock ringed by a crop of daisies, as all their people stood to watch the ceremony. The rest of the day flowed into a relaxed cocktail hour, tacos from the taco truck while listening to speeches, and into their first dance under the string lights. At some point we snuck away for a little hike down to the ocean cliffs to take some portraits.
One of the biggest things that stood out to me on our initial inquiry call was the way they really wanted to feel like themselves in their photos. They didn’t want anything traditional, rather just a collection of photos that were true to them and their celebration. They wanted real nostalgia, nothing curated. As a documentary styled photographer, this is my dream request to hear from couples. People who are seeking real documentation, who understand that there is a moment for posed photos, but that the event itself shouldn’t be planned around it. The kind of people who don’t want photos just to post, but those who want the prints to tuck into their car’s glove compartment and hang on the fridge.
This is something I come back to time and time again, the evidence of us.
Jen and Tristan, thank you for trusting me with this.
